European Committee of the Regions,
The International Day of Democracy is a fitting occasion to reflect on a concept that sits at the heart of democracy: accountability.
At this conference, Maina Kiai, a former UN special rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association and a prominent Kenya human rights activist will give a much-anticipated keynote speech on this topic.
Maina Kiaia has spent much of his career focused on combatting corruption, supporting political reform and fighting against impunity in his native Kenya. As UN special rapporteur, he authored and co-authored a number of high-profile reports on the rights of assembly and association.
This important conference will bring together some exceptional individuals from across the world who have been involved in the fight for democratic accountability. These include civil society leaders, elected officials, investigative journalists, academics and EU officials. While these individuals will address the issue of accountability from their particular standpoints, their combined experience makes clear that accountability is a critical development factor within all societies.
This conference is funded by the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR).
