As part of Germany's Presidency of the Council of the EU i, the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection is hosting an online conference on “Data Economy, AI and Intellectual Property”, which can be followed via livestream.

This will be followed in the afternoon by two panel discussions on copyright law as a prelude to a series of workshops.

Federal Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht explains:

The protection of intellectual property is facing new challenges due to digitalisation and in particular to the highly dynamic developments in the field of artificial intelligence. If we wish to harness the opportunities offered by digitalisation, we must be innovative as regulators. Only then can we ensure that the valuable resource of data serves not just economic interests but also - and indeed primarily - the common good. Our aim is to take the right steps in this direction. I am therefore delighted that we have been able to bring together high-level experts from business, research and civil society for today’s event.

After a welcome address by Christine Lambrecht, Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection, there will be an opening speech by Thierry Breton i, EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services. This will be followed by the online conference and then two workshops. These are the first in a series of further workshops to be held during the German EU Council Presidency.
