Minister of Foreign Affairs Anže Logar will attend the Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday, 12 July 2021, in Brussels. The meeting will be headed by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell i.

The ministers are expected to discuss the geopolitical impacts of new technologies in relation to security and defence, including cybersecurity. The agenda is also likely to include discussions on the opportunities and challenges of the European Union in the global race for new technologies, possible next steps of the Union in this area, and its relation to global partners and third countries.

The ministers will address the increasingly challenging humanitarian, political and security situation in the Tigray region in the north of Ethiopia as well as the prospective further steps of the Union to secure a ceasefire and alleviate the humanitarian situation. In the debate on the strategic compass, it is anticipated that foreign ministers will further illuminate the context of the joint foreign and security policy, along with some horizontal aspects, such as an integrated approach, foreign policy aspects of partnerships, a link with developments of the civilian part of the Common Security and Defence Policy, and the comprehensive inclusion of the most relevant foreign policy and strategic aspects.

As to current matters, the ministers will discuss the situation in Afghanistan and the report made during the visit of a group of ministers to the South Caucasus, particularly regarding cooperation between the Union and these countries. It is also expected that the Foreign Affairs Council conclusions on connectivity and priorities of the European Union in the UN General Assembly will be adopted.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will be joining foreign ministers of EU member states for lunch to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
