President Sassoli i opened the 14-17 September part session in Brussels.
As the COVID-19 emergency continues, President Sassoli expressed his regret that the difficult decision had to be taken not to hold the September part session in Strasbourg. The President thanked MEPs and the French authorities for their support and voiced his wish for a return to Strasbourg as soon as possible.
President Sassoli expressed solidarity with the family of Jozef Chovanec, who died having been detained in Charleroi airport in February 2018. “The respect for human rights is a key value of the European Union. We support the demand for a full investigation to ensure clarity on the case, and call for explanations from those responsible”, said the President, adding that the case has already been referred to the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee and the EP will follow the investigation closely.
