EVENT POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Brussels, 19 March 2020 , Ms Agnes Jongerius MEP is organising a lunch event on platform workers jointly with the five EU agencies (Cedefop, Eurofound, EU-OSHA, ETF and ELA) under the responsibility of the European Parliament Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL).

The event is by invitation only and will run from 12:30 to 14:30. It will bring together five EU Agencies offering to MEPs expertise on labour market, employment and working conditions, health and safety, skills and training and the cross-border element to feed into the current debate.

While platform work can offer important opportunities (such as working time flexibility) it has attracted policy attention mainly because of the challenges it raises for the economy, employees and the labour market.

These challenges relate to growing uncertainty around employment status, working conditions, including health and safety, learning and skills, access to social protection, and access to representation and collective bargaining.

What will the European institutions do to help workers and companies to steer the transition to the digital economy into the right direction with the least possible negative consequences while maximising the potential benefits?

This year the European Commission will launch a New Digital Services Act and organise a Platform Work Summit to discuss priority issues and possible solutions.

The following issues will be addressed:

  • How prevalent is platform work in the EU and its neighbouring countries?
  • What are the promising policy solutions fostering the opportunities stemming from platform work?
  • What are the consequences of platform work for employment status, social security, working conditions, autonomy and career progression?
  • How to ensure platform work promotes continuing skills development and skills matching of individuals?
  • How to avoid discriminatory practices and barriers to entry into platform work?
  • How are online platforms shaping workers’ safety and health?
  • Faced with a global trend, does the EU need an international and cross-border regulatory framework?

The presentations and debate will be held in English.

Europese Stichting tot Verbetering van de Levens- en Arbeidsomstandigheden (Eurofound)

Dit agentschap i draagt bij aan het Europees sociaal beleid door onderzoek te doen naar de werk- en levensomstandigheden binnen de EU. Eurofound voorziet regeringen, werkgevers, vakbonden en de Europese Commissie i van bevindingen, kennis en advies afkomstig van onafhankelijk en vergelijkend onderzoek.

Door middel van een verordening (COM(2016)531) uit 2016 werd de oude Eurofound-richtlijn uit 1975 herzien. Het doel van de herziening is om de structuur van de organisatie te moderniseren en de regels te updaten. Zo moet de rol van Eurofound worden geconcretiseerd. De verordening trad op 20 februari 2019 in werking.
