The Circular Plastics Alliance was launched in December 2018 by the European Commission, with the support of First Vice-President Timmermans and Vice-President Katainen, to build on the momentum gained with the European campaign for voluntary commitments by industry to produce and use more recycled plastics in the EU (European campaign for voluntary pledges). The EU target is that 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics find their way into products in the EU by 2025, a 150% increase compared to 2016.

The Circular Plastics Alliance signatories adopted their declaration on 20 September 2019, endorsing the 10 million tonnes target and describing their commitments for action to achieve this target. Already 147 stakeholder organisations representing the full plastics value chains have signed the declaration. On 19 November 2019, the working group of the alliance on packaging will meet for the first time in the European Committee of the Regions.
