MEP Tineke Strik (Dutch Greens) asks commissioner-designate Olivér Várhelyi (Hungary) to explain how he as representative of the Hungarian government of Viktor Orbán opposed the report by MEP Judith Sargentini on the rule of law in Hungary, but now needs to judge candidate EU-countries on their rule of law. Várhelyi admits to Strik's question that a country where the government oppresses opposition parties, controls the media, forces judges in retirement and discriminates minorities, cannot become a member of the EU.
