From Mubarak to Sisi the emphasis on stability has served as a point of legitimation for the Egyptian state, both domestically and internationally. Moreover, European and international politicians and policymakers remain concerned about Egypt’s stability in the region.

But how stable is Egypt’s purported stability really? Is the Egyptian state really as strong as it appears? Or are there cracks beneath the surface? And what about Egypt’s economy, and how stable is this? And in light of Egypt’s recent protests and harsh crackdown, should stability remain the primary political concern? What are the human costs of stability?

Dr Vivienne Matthies-Boon (UvA) will enter into a conversation on these and other important questions with the following prominent Egyptian human rights activists, international human rights activists and Egypt experts:

  • Ahmed Said - Human Rights Activist
  • Hussein Bayoumi - Amnesty International Egypt
  • Petra Stienen - Egypt Expert
  • Youssef Rahman - Amnesty International Netherlands
  • An Egyptian economist.
