The ten-day course will cover all aspects of satellite navigation, including:

  • theory of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS),
  • threats to satnav systems,
  • patents and intellectual property rights,
  • creation of satnav-based businesses.

The school will also offer participants the opportunity to develop a GNSS-based business idea, as part of a group project. The project will build on innovative ideas and take into account the planning of the novel product or service, its technical realisation and its marketing to customers.

Summer school

The International Summer School on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) 2019 is organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC), in partnership with several international institutions.

It will take place from the 15th to 26th of July 2019, in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal.

The Summer School is open to:

  • Graduate students (more than 3 years studies)
  • PhD students and postdoctoral researchers (< 38 years)
  • Young engineers and professionals from industry and agencies (< 38 years)

The number of participants is limited to 50 and places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Background

The ESA/JRC International Summer School on GNSS 2019 is organised in cooperation with the University of Porto, Faculty of Science (https://sigarra.up.pt/up/en/p/fcup), Stanford University (https://www.stanford.edu/), Institut Supérieur de l’Aeronautique et de l’Espace ISAE-SUPAERO (https://www.isae-supaero.fr /fr/), and University FAF Munich (https://www.unibw.de/home).

The role of the JRC

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has been supporting the ESA/JRC summer school on GNSS since 2013. The JRC contributes to the organisation of the event, inviting prominent speakers and sharing its technical and scientific competences with students through lectures, laboratory work and project supervision.

JRC scientists will chair a lecture on “GNSS threats and vulnerabilities” with a practical "hands-on" session on GNSS signal processing.
