2017 marks the 50th year of Israel’s military conquest of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. Since the Six-Day War of June 1967, the Israeli’s have occupied Palestinian territories with military rule and a Jew-only settlement strategy. Since 1967, 126 settlements and dozens of “outpost” have been built. Today, more than 600,00 Israeli citizens live on the West Bank and in East Jerusalem. Israel has withdrawn settlements from Gaza, but the strict Israeli blockade has turned Gaza in an open-air prison for the approximately 1.8 million Palestinian refugees.
The West Bank settlements, infrastructure and agricultural land are built on Palestinian land and constitute flagrant violations of international law and many UN Security Council resolutions. The existence of the settlements infringes on Palestinian human rights and seriously block the Palestinian right of self-determination and they impede the creation of a viable Palestinian state.
The Israeli journalist Amira Hass (from the daily Ha’aretz) will focus on the consequences of the occupation for both Palestinians and Israeli’s and on future perspectives.
The world community considers the Israeli settlements illegal and practically no country recognizes the Israeli sovereignty over East-Jerusalem. However, why does the world tolerate 50 years of occupation, dispossession and discrimination? The Palestinian-American political scientist and journalist Rami Khouri will try to answer these questions.
The Palestinian economist and former PLO-ambassador in France Hind Khoury will be interviewed about her memories of the Six-Day War and the occupation of the West Bank. She will also talk about the position of Christian Palestinians in Israel and Palestine
Apart from Hass, Khouri and Khoury, we welcome musicians, writers, actors and activists. Not only to remember 50 years of occupation, but also to make a statement: stop the violation of human rights, stop Israeli colonization and stop the illegal settlements.
