Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2016 vervulde Slowakije het voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie i. Slowakije nam het stokje over van Nederland. Het was de eerste keer dat dat land het voorzitterschap bekleedde. Prioriteiten waren economische groei, een moderne interne markt, migratie en de EU als wereldspeler.
Slowakije werkte nauw samen in een trojka i met Nederland en Malta.
