MEP Bas Belder (ECR) on the listing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation by the Arab League and the GCC:

“I welcome the recent moves by the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council to list Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation. The EU’s distinction between Hezbollah’s political and military wings is truly incomprehensible as they are two sides of the same coin. I therefore strongly call on the EU to urgently follow the steps by the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council, and to place the whole of the Hezbollah movement on the EU’s list of terror organisations. This would be an important first step to seek to stabilise the region, curb Hezbollah’s terror activities as well as its renowned money laundering operations. In this light, I recall the excellent statement by former Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, that primarily viewing Hezbollah as a political or social services organisation because it provides certain of those functions, would be like calling al-Qaeda an urban-planning organisation because of its desire to level tall buildings. I thus remind the EU that the attacks committed by Hezbollah against innocent civilians in the EU, the Middle East and world-wide, serve as a sombre reminder that it is not just a political party.”
