A four day introduction week at FabCity and Pakhuis de Zwijger for the students who will be occupying the campus and the city for three months.

The students will look into specific urban issues in ten urban areas. Following the four-day kick-off at Pakhuis de Zwijger and FabCity and a visit to the Innovation Expo around the A-Lab (April 14) they will set off for their research into the different areas.
Programme
Today we have scheduled a full programme from 09:30 a.m. till 19:00 p.m. The kick-off starts in the morning with an official and festive opening of the campus on the head of Java Island.* Amongst others, Jet Bussemaker (Minister of Education, Culture and Science) and Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan will be present.
The programme continues at the nearby Pakhuis de Zwijger. After a warm welcome by Egbert Fransen (director Pakhuis de Zwijger / EU2016 cultural intendant), we will talk about big trends and stories from different angles. Lucas de Man performs his play In Search of Europe and Arjan van Timmeren, Henk Ovink and Eva Gladek will give an inspiring lecture.
In the late afternoon, students will debate the subject of ‘Future Skills & Creative Entrepeneurship’ with different EU delegates, guided by Farid Tabarki.**

Arjan van Timmeren is professor in Environmental Technology & Design at TU Delft and Scientific Director of AMS Institute; the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions. 14:30 Lecture given by Henk Ovink
Henk Ovink is Special Envoy for International Water Affairs in the Netherlands and has served as a senior advisor to the American Federal Government and the former Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Taskforce instituted by President Obama. What began as a new kind of design competition (Rebuild by Design) in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, has transformed into an innovative process that places local communities and civic leaders at the heart of a robust, interdisciplinary, creative process to generate implementable solutions for a more resilient region.
15.00 Pitch #02 by FabCity project: 'Netwerk Democratie dome' by Josien Pieterse
Josien Pieterse is founder of Netwerk Democratie, an organization committed to a flexible democracy within which citizens are more involved and, with the use of technology, actively contribute.
15.05 Lecture given by Eva Gladek
Eva Gladek is founder and CEO of Metabolic, a systems consulting and cleantech development firm based in Amsterdam. They advise, develop and build. Eva has a Master’s in Industrial Environmental Management from Yale University and is an expert in technical environmental management techniques such as Life Cycle Assessment and Material Flow Analysis.
15.35 Pitch #03 by FabCity project: 'Wasted' by Francesca Miazzo
Wasted uses plastic to create added value for the neighbourhood, for example by using plastic as a new currency unit; reinforce the local community; cleaning the streets and building new utilitarian objects.
