Seminar 'Are European borders (still) inviolable? The OSCE 40 years after Helsinki' | vrijdag 26 juni 2015

Forty years ago, in 1975, thirty-five states signed the Helsinki Final Act, an agreement dedicated to improving the relations between the West and the Communist countries. The signing of the declaration laid the groundwork for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The Helsinki Final Act was seen as a significant step toward reducing Cold War tensions. Agreement was reached on several security, economic and human rights issues.

This year is a good moment to look back on the outcomes of the Helsinki Act and project them on todays’ situation. How inviolable are the boundaries of states forty years later, considering recent events in Ukraine? How secure is Europe? And how well defended are human rights, especially those of national minorities?

On June 26th, the Telders Foundation - the Dutch liberal think tank affiliated to the liberal party VVD - and the VVD Foreign Affairs Committee will look into those questions during the seminar: “Are European borders (still) inviolable? The OSCE 40 years after Helsinki”

Several speakers, with different backgrounds and insights, will shine their light on this issue.

Dr. Marc Jansen (historian at the University of Amsterdam), will speak about the Russian perspective on its relationship with Europe and President Vladimir Putin’s notion of ‘Russian World’(Russkiy mir).

Dr. Wolfgang Zellner (Head of the Centre for OSCE Research, Deputy Director of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg) will elaborate on the future role of the OSCE.

H.E. Madame Astrid Thors, OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, will give an overview of her present activities (tbc)

The presentations will be followed by a Panel Discussion which will be moderated by Ida van Veldhuizen, former Ambassador to the OSCE.
