The media freedom situation in South East Europe has during the last years not only stagnated but in fact deteriorated.

Reports from the ground speak of attempts to silence critical voices. They speak of authorities meddling in journalists’ work, of legislation being adopted or changed overnight to make it harder for freedom of expression and media freedom to prosper. Something needs to be done.

The South East Europe Media Conference (SEEMC) is an annual event held in different venues in South-Eastern Europe. It aims to bring together various stakeholders, creating a platform for dialogue on current challenges to freedom of the media and possible ways forward.

The conference will address today’s most crucial media-freedom issues in the region. The agenda will cover topics including:

  • PSBs, Regulators, and the Digital Switchover
  • Internet Freedom
  • Investigative Journalism
  • Safety of Journalists
  • Legislation and its Implementation
  • Self-Regulation
  • Media Transparency

The conference is financially sponsored by the Netherlands and supported by the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, OSCE Mission in Kosovo, OSCE Mission to Montenegro, OSCE Mission to Skopje and the OSCE Mission to Serbia.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and Albany Associates will conduct research during the conference to understand the major media developments and impact of media freedom initiatives by the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media across the region.

Delegates at the conference will be interviewed and declarations from previous conferences will be scrutinized to determine how the media sectors of the countries in the region have evolved and what the main media freedom challenges remain. The results will be published by the end of 2013.
