In 2013, Utrecht will commemorate the tercentenary of the "Peace of Utrecht" of 1713. The peace treaties concluded at the end of the Congress of Utrecht (1712-1713) brought to an end the religious wars that had devastated Europe in the preceding period, as well as the War of the Spanish Succession. In a series of bilateral treaties, the nations of Europe made arrangements which introduced the "balance of power" within the European State system, and dealt with such issues as colonial expansion and trade as well as the slave trade.

During 2013 a series of events will take place in Utrecht to commemorate the Peace of Utrecht. One of these events will be a conference, organized by Utrecht University’s School of Law, entitled The 1713 Peace of Utrecht and its enduring effects. This multi-disciplinary conference, with contributions from international law, history and international relations, will examine what the effects have been of the Peace Treaties concluded at Utrecht in 1713, including the question what features in the current international (legal) order can be traced back to what was agreed in Utrecht in 1713.
