Conference of the EESC Bureau in cooperation with the Presidency of the Council of the European Union

As part of the Cyprus presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) organises a conference on Restoring stability, trust and confidence in Europe: civil society for a new form of governance. The conference will be held in Nicosia, Cyprus, at the headquarters of the Cyprus Workers Confederation on 16 October 2012 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The EESC president, Staffan Nilsson, will open the debate, and he will be followed by Sotiroula Charalambous, Cypriot minister for labour and social insurance, who will deliver the keynote speech. A range of figures from local and European civil society organisations, national and local authorities in Cyprus, NGOs, and other key stakeholders will attend the conference in order to discuss how organised civil society can contribute to restoring public trust and confidence in Europe.

The various forms of social dialogue and participation that could make Europe more relevant to its citizens' needs and the EU's contribution to growth, job creation and stability will be among the topics discussed. The conference will provide a great opportunity for a constructive debate on the current social and economic situation in Europe and in Cyprus.

Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité (EESC)

Het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité (EESC) werd in 1957 door het Verdrag tot oprichting van de Europese Economische Gemeenschap i opgericht als raadgevend orgaan om de belangen van de verschillende economische en maatschappelijke organisaties in de Europese Unie te vertegenwoordigen.
