2010 represents the 10th Anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which acknowledged, for the first time, the importance of a gender dimension in the areas of peace building, peace keeping and conflict prevention.

On this occasion, Belgium and the EU are organising three events in Brussels, Geneva and New York, structured around the three main pillars of Resolution 1325: participation, protection and prevention. The conference taking place in Brussels will focus on 'Women's Participation in Peace and Security'.

The event will be opened by speeches from the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/ Vice President of the European Commission, Catherine Ashton i, and from Steven Vanackere, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium.

There will also be key note addresses from Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women and Margot Wallström i, Special Representative to the UN Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict.

Panel sessions will focus respectively on women's participation in peace keeping and women's participation in peace-building.

Participation is by invitation only: applications can be sent to 10yearsof1325@diplobel.fed.be
