The President of the Spanish Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero i, will meet the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy i, in Brussels at 3 pm on Tuesday 4 May to discuss issues such as the financial aid to Greece agreed by the Eurogroup.

The meeting between Van Rompuy and Zapatero, whose country currently holds the Presidency of the EU, comes two days after the Euro countries agreed the first-ever bailout plan for one of their members, and comes ahead of the meeting of Eurogroup heads of state and government in Brussels on Friday, when they will discuss new rules on economic governance.

After approving a strict austerity plan, Greece will have access to a series of loans of up to €110 billion during the 2010-2012 period, with €30 billion of this sum being provided by the International Monetary Fund.

At 2pm, Zapatero will also attend the ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors, an alliance of European municipalities united in the battle against climate change, with the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso i, and the President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek i, also due to take part in the event.

Zapatero will meet with Buzek and Barroso at 12pm and 1pm respectively at the European Parliament.
