Statement by Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič on the long-term transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine

Met dank overgenomen van Europese Commissie (EC) i, gepubliceerd op dinsdag 31 december 2019.

Following the political agreement from 20 December 2019 between the European Commission, Russia and Ukraine, the new gas transit contract has now been signed by the respective companies in Russia and Ukraine. The European Commission has welcomed the signature, with Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič saying:

"This is a great day for Europe's energy security, as all the pieces have fallen into place. I welcome the signature of the transit contract between respective companies in Russia and Ukraine, building on our political agreement from last week. I also welcome the interconnection agreement reached by Slovakia and Ukraine, and facilitated by the Commission. Let me express my strongest appreciation for all the hard work and effort by everyone involved. In practice, this means that gas will continue to flow from Russia to Europe via Ukraine as of 1 January 2020. This is a powerful message to both, our consumers and industry, clearly demonstrating that the EU cares and delivers."
