The unexpected trade agreement reached by Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Trump on July 26th suggests that relations between the EU and the US may not be as contentious as often portrayed. It was even hailed by some as the start of a new Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and adduced as evidence that diplomacy is even more important in times of uncertainty than in periods of tranquility.

What lessons can the EU, and Europe as a whole, draw from this surprising outcome, particularly where economic and security relations with the US are concerned? Is Europe showing a newfound determination to be the master of its own destiny?

This fireside chat between David O'Sullivan, Ambassador of the EU to the United States, and Karel Lannoo, CEPS CEO, will be a unique opportunity to gain further insight into the future of EU-US relations.
