The news:

The event of the EU Datathon 2017 on 16 November is built around showcasing the versatility of open data and to show its potential contribution to the priorities of the Juncker Commission i. It focuses on the reuse of data from the EU Open Data Portal, the access point to open data produced by the institutions and agencies of the European Union.

At its core are the presentations of the competing teams, from which a jury will finally select the winning application. Ten finalist teams were selected from among 32 submissions received from 12 countries (Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Austria, Netherlands, United Kingdom, etc.) and covering a wide range of EU datasets (Cohesion, TED, CORDIS, Erasmus, transparency, geospatial data, EUR-Lex, mobility, employment, quality of life, Eurovoc, Environment, etc.). The proposals are selected by the following criteria: Relevance to the Juncker Commission's priorities, impact, innovation, technical achievement and excellence.

The background:

The EU Datathon 2017 is co-organised by the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the Publications Office of the European Union. The datathon has started in September 2017 with a series of three webinars on open data of the EU institutions and will culminate in the final event in Brussels (Residence Palace) on 16 November 2017.

The relevance of the event will be highlighted by the Estonian Presidency, who will play a key role in framing the event in the opening speech, chairing the jury and announcing the winners at the end. The jury members are selected by Publications Office among internal and external stakeholders (Estonian Presidency, Publications Office, Open Data Institute, companies, academia, etc.).
