Future Presidencies discussed co-operation in Brussels - Hoofdinhoud
EU Directors of Estonia, Austria and Bulgaria were in Brussels today to discuss Estonian EU Presidency starting next summer, UK's exit from the EU, the EU enlargement and neighbourhood policy, including migration.
The Estonian delegation was led by acting Undersecretary, Foreign Ministry’s Director General of the Department of Europe Aino Lepik von Wirén who gave an overview of the preparations of the Estonian EU Presidency and reaffirmed that they are on track. Talking about the UK leaving the EU, Lepik von Wirén emphasised the need to preserve the unity of the EU as well as close relationship and diverse cooperation with the UK, taking into account the balance of rights and obligations.
Discussing the EU enlargement, participants of the meeting agreed that the enlargement policy has to be based on strict but fair conditionality. According to Aino Lepik von Wirén, “Estonia wants the enlargement policy to retain its credibility and reliability both in the candidate states and in the EU. That will encourage political and economic reforms and will help to guarantee security and stability in Europe.”
Three future presidencies - Estonia, Bulgaria and Austria- confirmed the need to continue with regular meetings and discussions.
