The news:

The 5th Brussels Debate "Innovation policy: time to step on the gas", in the framework of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009, will examine how innovation can help EU enterprises emerge from the current recession stronger and how it can help the EU address global challenges.

The background:

Enhancing innovation, and innovative capacity, is at the core of attaining sustainable long term growth and social progress in the EU. The re-launched Lisbon Partnership for growth and jobs has put innovation and entrepreneurship at the centre and called for decisive and more coherent action by the Community and the Member States to foster them.

On this basis, an ambitious European innovation policy has been launched and the Small Business Act has been agreed, and this partnership approach has already borne fruit. Almost all Member States have improved their innovation performance. The innovation gap between the EU and its key competitors, the US and Japan, has narrowed. At the same time, as new competitors are emerging and challenges are getting bigger, Europe must not only sustain its innovation performance, but further improve it.

The European Union has declared 2009 the European Year of Creativity and Innovation. The Year aims to raise awareness of importance of creativity and innovation as a key competence of personal, social and economic development.
