The European Commission appoints a new Head of Representation in Sweden

Today, Mr Christian Danielsson has been appointed as future Head of the European Commission's Representation in Sweden. In this function, he will act as the official representative of the European Commission in Sweden under the political authority of President Ursula von der Leyen i, with date of effect to be determined.

Mr Danielsson, a Swedish national, is currently the Director-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR). Previously, he was Deputy Secretary-General in the Secretariat-General. Earlier on, he took on the role of Deputy Head of Cabinet in the Cabinet of European Commission Vice-President Verheugen, where he was responsible for the relations with Turkey and the files on competitiveness and better regulation. Prior to joining the European Commission, Mr Danielsson has also been the Permanent Representative of Sweden to the European Union. With 39 years of professional career predominantly in high-level positions in the European Commission, Mr Christian Danielsson brings very significant knowledge and experience in EU affairs into his new post.

Background

The Commission maintains Representations in all capitals of EU Member States, and Regional Offices in Barcelona, Bonn, Marseille, Milan, Munich and Wroclaw. The Representations are the Commission's eyes, ears and voice on the ground in EU Member States. They support the President and the whole Commission in their interaction with Member States. Heads of Representation are nominated by the President and act under her political authority. They promote permanent political dialogue with the national, regional and local authorities, parliaments, social partners and civil society. The Representations provide country-specific knowledge, analysis and, advice to the President and all Members of the College. They reach out to citizens and together with the Spokesperson's Service, they promote the action of the EU through press, information and communication activities.
