Feeding Human Rights Council discussions on sustainable development and human rights, Geneva

The FRA Director will explain how the EU has hardwired human rights into its Treaties, core legislation and concrete policy commitments as part of his keynote speech at an event on 16 January in Geneva.

He will underline the need for the EU to continue its efforts to champion a rights-based approach to sustainable development both within the EU and in its relations with non-EU countries.

He will speaking at an event on ‘Sustainable Development Goals and human rights’, organised by the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR). The discussions will be taken forward to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) to advance human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals that will take place in New York in June 2019.

A Human Rights Council’s Resolution on promoting and protecting human rights and on implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development called for the event.

Other speakers include Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Global SDGs Advocate, Jeffrey Sachs, government representatives, experts from around the world from civil society, business and UN agencies.
