Engineering Needs and Challenges in Quantum Technology

The development of quantum technologies such as quantum computers, quantum sensors and quantum communications networks is reach a critical phase. Significant engineering challenges must be overcome if quantum technologies are to realise their impressive potential.

This invitation-only workshop brings together members of the quantum technology research community to highlight the difficulties and needs facing quantum technology development in their field, as well as engineers and industry well placed to tackle the challenges ahead. It will encourage strong interactions amongst participants, including break-out sessions and audience

engagement.

Workshop Aims:-

Identify the critical engineering needs and challenges behind the development of practical quantum technologies and translation of QT research, focusing in particular on common challenges across different applications / platforms.

Connect researchers with engineers from academia and industry best placed to address these needs and challenges, encouraging collaborative solutions.

The workshop will span needs and challenges present across leading quantum technology platforms, including superconductor, semiconductor, topological, trapped ions, cold atoms and photonic systems, as well as the full breadth of

quantum technology applications sectors.

A workshop report will be presented to management of the European Flagship in Quantum Technologies to help inform the Quantum Engineering roadmap.

Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME)

EASME replaced the EACI (Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation). It has been set-up by the Commission to manage a number of EU programmes on its behalf:

  • Horizon 2020: Research
  • COSME: Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs)
  • LIFE: Environment and climate action
  • EMFF: The Maritime and Fisheries Fund
  • Intelligent Energy – Europe
  • The Eco-innovation initiative
