Prof. R. (Romano) Prodi

Romano Prodi (1939) was van 1999 tot 2004 voorzitter van de Europese Commissie. Hij is van huis uit wetenschapper en was onder meer hoogleraar in Bologna, Trento en Harvard. In 1995 werd hij voorman van de centrumlinkse Olijf-coalitie, waarna hij in 1996-1998 premier was. Ook in 2006-2008 was hij minister-president van Italië. Prodi is nu voorzitter van de centrumlinkse Democratische Partij van Italië. Behalve met de invoering van de euro kreeg hij als commissievoorzitter te maken met onder meer de dienstenrichtlijn, de onderhandelingen over toetreding van Turkije en de aanpak van de klimaatproblematiek.
